Are groceries killing anyone else’s wallet right now?

Don’t get me wrong, I love a nice leisurely walk through my local Whole Foods Market, but I want to cry when I swipe my credit card after a grocery trip. I gave Costco a try and was pleasantly surprised by the organic options available. I didn’t find any grass fed beef last time, BUT I fully intend on checking again during my next visit. Though saving money is important, your health is the number one priority so it is OK to splurge a little bit when it comes to some organic produce and organic, pasture raised or grass fed meat.

While at Costco, I did find organic chicken, beef, ground turkey, broccoli, pears, blueberries, green beans, spinach, quinoa, coconut water, apple cider vinegar, diced tomatoes and eggs. The bill was almost half my typical bill at Whole Foods.

Here are a few key tips to saving money on your grocery bill when trying to eat clean:

1.     Buy in Bulk: Purchase organic items in bulk, especially non-perishable items like grains, nuts, and seeds. This can help you get a lower per-unit cost. You can also freeze some of these items such as berries to save them for later and reduce waste.

2.     Shop Seasonally: Buy organic produce when it's in season. Seasonal produce is often more abundant and therefore less expensive.

3.     Compare Prices: Check prices at different stores and farmers' markets. Sometimes, certain stores may have better deals on organic products. Whole Foods does run regular sales on certain items, which can save a few bucks.

4.     Focus on Essential Organic Items: Prioritize buying organic for items that are more heavily sprayed with pesticides. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) provides a list called the "Dirty Dozen," which highlights produce items that are recommended to buy organic due to higher pesticide residues.

5.     Plan Meals and Reduce Waste: Plan your meals to avoid unnecessary purchases, and try to minimize food waste. This will save you money in the long run.
