As parents, we all want the best for our little ones, especially when it comes to their health and safety. However, navigating the world of baby personal care products for our littles can be daunting, especially when you start to uncover the hidden toxins lurking in some of these seemingly harmless items. Let’s dive into some of the most common toxins found in baby and toddler personal care products and how you can avoid them to ensure your child’s environment is as non-toxic as possible.
1. Phthalates
Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break. They are often found in products like shampoos, lotions, and powders. Research has linked phthalates to hormone disruptions, which can affect the development of the endocrine system in infants. The CDC has found measurable levels of several phthalate metabolites in the general population, indicating widespread exposure.
What to Look For: Check labels for ingredients like DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate), DEP (diethyl phthalate), and DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate). Opt for products labeled as “phthalate-free.”
2. Parabens
Parabens are used as preservatives in many personal care products to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. However, they are known to mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast cancer tissues. This is particularly concerning for developing infants who are more sensitive to hormonal disruptions.
What to Look For: Ingredients such as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben should be avoided. Choose products that use natural preservatives or are labeled “paraben-free.”
3. Fragrances
While that fresh baby smell is delightful, artificial fragrances can be a source of hidden chemicals. Many fragrances are made up of a cocktail of chemicals that can include phthalates and other harmful substances. These can cause skin irritation and have been linked to respiratory issues and allergies.
What to Look For: Products labeled with “fragrance-free” are the safest choices. Be wary of products that list “fragrance” or “parfum” without specifying their sources.
4. Formaldehyde Releasers
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, and while it’s rarely listed as an ingredient, it can be released from preservatives used in baby products. These include DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea.
What to Look For: Avoid products with the above preservatives. Look for items that use safer alternatives like natural preservatives.
5. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
SLS and SLES are surfactants used to create lather in products like shampoos and bubble baths. They can cause skin irritation and may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen.
What to Look For: Choose products that use mild, plant-based surfactants such as decyl glucoside or lauryl glucoside.
6. Talc
Talc is often used in baby powders to prevent diaper rash and keep skin dry. However, it can be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Even asbestos-free talc can cause respiratory issues when inhaled.
What to Look For: Opt for talc-free powders made with cornstarch or arrowroot powder.
Making Safer Choices
So, how can you ensure you’re choosing the safest products for your baby? Here are a few tips:
• Read Labels Carefully: Familiarize yourself with common toxic ingredients and scrutinize product labels.
• Choose Certified Products: Look for certifications from organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) or the USDA Organic seal.
• Opt for Natural and Organic: Natural and organic products often have fewer synthetic chemicals and are less likely to contain harmful toxins.
• DIY: Consider making your own baby care products using simple, non-toxic ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter.
